DMA Candidate in Band Conducting

Joseph Cernuto is in his second year as a DMA candidate in conducting and graduate teaching assistant at the University of Iowa. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Cernuto was the director of bands at Sequoyah Public Schools in Claremore, Oklahoma. While at Sequoyah, Mr. Cernuto taught marching band, high school concert band, jazz band, beginning band and middle school bands. Mr. Cernuto's bands and students consistently earned superiors in district and state contests.  Mr. Cernuto also served as director of bands at Rogers State University, where he reestablished the music program after a 15 year absence, and served as director of bands at West Rowan High School in Mt. Ulla, North Carolina. Mr. Cernuto is an experienced and in demand adjudicator, drill writer, and music arranger.

Mr. Cernuto earned his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Music Education from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. While at UF, Mr. Cernuto was principal trumpet of the Symphonic Band, section leader of the Pride of the Sunshine, and performed in numerous jazz and chamber ensembles. Mr. Cernuto served on the staff of the marching band as a Master's student and taught Music for Elementary Majors.  His major teachers include David Waybright, Matt Sexton, Joyce Davis, Russell Robinson, Tim Brophy, and Charles Hoffer. Mr. Cernuto has completed conducting studies with H. Robert Reynolds, Steve Davis, Joe Parisi, and Craig Kirchoff. Mr. Cernuto's professional affiliations include the Oklahoma Bandmaster's Association, Oklahoma Music Educator's Association, the National Association for Music Education and Kappa Kappa Psi.

Mr. Cernuto and his wife Megan have three daughters - Quinn, Nora and Avery.
