The University is home to over 500 student organizations. The following is a short list of student organizations whose mission expressly includes supporting LGBTQ students.
The Center for Diversity & Enrichment (CDE) brings together under one umbrella a variety of programs, offices, and services that work to create a welcoming climate for students, staff, and faculty from communities underrepresented in higher education. Multicultural Specialists are available to talk to students about all aspects of their college experience.

The vision of the Pride Alliance Center (Pride House) is to support student success and holistic wellness by providing a nurturing and affirming space for our LGBTQ students. The Pride House is a space for students to authentically exist and engage with their peers and UI community.

Student Legal Services (SLS) provides high quality, free advice and affordable legal representation for currently enrolled University of Iowa students. SLS can be a resource for name changes and birth certificate changes, and can help orient people on where to start if they feel they have been the victim of discrimination.

Student Care & Assistance in the Office of the Dean of Students offers care, support, and advocacy during times of personal struggles, crises, or emergencies. Student Care & Assistance will discuss options for addressing concerns and connect students to resources as needed. Students who experience concerns, harassment, or bullying behavior as a result of other individuals or groups will receive support and options to ensure the issues are handled efficiently and effectively.

The University of Iowa’s Campus Inclusion Team’s mission is to provide support and resources to any student with a concern about diversity, equity, and inclusion. The CIT response staff will listen to student concerns and assist in the process of identifying potential solutions.

The University of Iowa received a rating of 4 out of 5 starts from Campus Pride on its LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index based on our student life options, campus resources, and recruitment and retention efforts. The Office of Admissions provides information for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students to connect with the several resources and support networks on campus.

The Office of Student Financial Aid assists students with paying for their educational expenses with grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study. The mission of Student Disability Services (SDS) is to ensure a fair learning environment where students are able to succeed based on their own efforts and initiative. The staff at SDS work with students, faculty, and other university resources to coordinate accommodations for entitled students under federal legislation.

The University of Iowa Trans Alliance facilitates a week-long series of events during the spring semester. Participants come together to Support, Engage, and ACT in several ways throughout the week.
Iowa City Resources
The GLBTQA Youth Group at United Action for Youth is a casual group for youth ages 12-18 to hang out and to connect to their peers in a setting that affirms their sexual orientation and gender identity.
A support group for trans people and their allies. They work to extend across feelings of isolation and confusion to the connections that can grow through community. Information about meetings can be found in their Facebook group.
A support group for transgender and non-binary people with meetings in Des Moines, Urbandale, and Cedar Rapids.
One Iowa is the state’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization working toward full equality for LGBT individuals in Iowa through grassroots efforts and education.
The mission of the Queer Campus Coalition created by Iowa Safe Schools is to support LGBTQ students pursuing post-secondary education in Iowa. By communicating, growing, and advocating together, we can make institutional changes that lead to better and safer worlds for all students.
