Below are on-campus, local, statewide, and national resources for trans individuals.
The University is home to over 500 student organizations. The following is a short list of student organizations whose mission expressly includes supporting LGBTQ students.
The Center for Diversity & Enrichment (CDE) brings together under one umbrella a variety of programs, offices, and services that work to create a welcoming climate for students, staff, and faculty from communities underrepresented in higher education. Multicultural Specialists are available to talk to students about all aspects of their college experience.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer Resource Center (LGBTQRC) opened its doors in Fall 2006 and offers a supportive environment where students interact with others and experience diversity while serving their community.
Student Legal Services (SLS) provides high quality, free advice and affordable legal representation for currently enrolled University of Iowa students. SLS can be a resource for name changes and birth certificate changes, and can help orient people on where to start if they feel they have been the victim of discrimination.
Student Care & Assistance in the Office of the Dean of Students offers care, support, and advocacy during times of personal struggles, crises, or emergencies. Student Care & Assistance will discuss options for addressing concerns and connect students to resources as needed. Students who experience concerns, harassment, or bullying behavior as a result of other individuals or groups will receive support and options to ensure the issues are handled efficiently and effectively.
The Office of Student Financial Aid assists students with paying for their educational expenses with grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study. If you are experiencing financial difficulties or have special circumstances you would like considered (such as a parental relationship breakdown resulting in abuse or limited/no contact), please contact Sara Even in the Office of Student Financial Aid at firstname.lastname@example.org. Awards and scholarship information can be found here.
