About Computational Psychiatry

Computational psychiatry is the application of computing to improve mental health. This is accomplished through multidisciplinary research that brings together informaticians, basic scientists, computer scientists, and clinicians. The overall goal of computational psychiatry is to improve the understanding, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions.  All those interested in applying computing to mental health research, regardless of affiliation or background, are invited to join this symposium.

Computational psychiatry is a new field with many opportunities.  It has become a major area of emphasis in the overall mission of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). With the support of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, the University of Iowa Informatics Initiative (UI3), the UI Department of Psychiatry, and the Office of the Vice President for Research, investigators from across campus have come together to form an interest group that meets monthly to discuss available data and resources, funding opportunities, research findings, and developments in the field.
