Nolan Hauta is in his second year as a DMA candidate in Band Conducting and a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Iowa. His duties include assisting with the Hawkeye Marching Band, coordinating the Iowa Pep Band, conducting the three concert bands and administrative duties for the band department including oversight of the Iowa Honor Band and Iowa Summer Music Camps.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Hauta taught for several years in Minnesota. He taught in the Eden Prairie, Ely and Roseau school districts. Hauta has instructed musicians of all ages; elementary, middle school, high school, college, and adult plus private lessons on band instruments, drum set, piano, bass and guitar. At each school district, he expanded educational opportunities for his students through increased use of technology, classroom guests and travel. Over one hundred of his students have been selected to participate in honor bands.
Mr. Hauta holds a B.A. in Music with high distinction from the University of Minnesota, Morris and earned teaching licenses in instrumental and vocal music. He also holds a M.M. in Music Education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth where he also completed all the coursework and recitals for a M.M. degree in Conducting. At both colleges he performed with the bands, jazz bands, small ensembles, orchestras and pep bands. Mr. Hauta has also performed with numerous community bands, orchestras and choirs in addition to being a freelance trombonist.
Mr. Hauta has frequently served the Minnesota Band Directors Association as a section coach, audition adjudicator, board member, festival host and guest conductor. Additionally, he has been a section coach for the Minnesota All-State Band, guest conductor for the North Shore Summer Music Experience, and a clinician at the Middle School Band and Solo/Ensemble Festivals in Two Harbors, Minnesota. He has contributed to the publications Teaching Music, School Band and Orchestra and The Interval. He has also presented original research at the 2015 Minnesota Music Educators Association and the 2016 Historic Brass Society's Early Brass Festival. Mr. Hauta has held membership in ASBDA, CBDNA, IBA, MBDA, NAfME, NBA and WASBE. He is in demand as a guest conductor, clinician and performer.
