Collaborative Practice

Pharmacist have a unique skill set and provide a wide array of patient care services. These services have been shown to reduce adverse drug events, improve safety, and thus optimize patient outcomes. In order for a pharmacist to be integrated into patient care, they must be authorized under collaborative practice agreements (CPA)

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy deems "collaborative practice" as a physician delegating aspects of their patients' drug therapy management  to an authorized pharmacist through a designated practice protocol. Current regulations provide authority for both MDs and DOs to enter collaborative practice agreements with pharmacists. See Iowa Administrative Code 657-8.34 (155A) for more information.
