I am writing to update you about the Academic Organizational Structure 2020 Initiative.
Phase I of the initiative began with a task force of four collegiate deans charged with gathering information about our current academic structures as well as input regarding future possibilities. I am excited to soon move to Phase II, the goal of which is getting broad input from the entire campus for how we optimize our academic future. More details will follow, but as the semester begins, I wanted to provide the general timeline of what comes next. By the end of September, we will:
Disseminate a Phase I report focused on principles, themes, issues, and early ideas that emerged from work of the deans' task force.
Establish a steering committee of 10-12 members with shared governance and broad academic representation to steward an inclusive process of gathering feedback and concrete suggestions to build on the Phase I report. Tom Rice, serving as a special assistant to the Provost on a part-time basis, has enthusiastically agreed to chair this steering committee.
Provide multiple formats and opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to offer input and to engage with the steering committee, including on-line comments and suggestions, town hall meetings, and additional individual and group meetings as requested.
Phase II and feedback gathering will continue through the end of the calendar year. The steering committee will combine campus input with the Phase I report to generate a second report for the Offices of the President and Provost early in the spring semester.
